Then in 1807 Scoresby invented the Crows Nest It is believed the pulpit in St Mary's Parish Church, at the top of the 199 steps, near Whitby Abbey, was the inspiration for this.
Scoresby went on to to sail for a further ten years making four voyages on the 'John', a Greenock ship, two in the 'Mars' from Whitby and and four in the 'Fame'. In 1822 Scoresby took his last voyage as the 'Fame' took fire while anchored in the Orkneys.
Captain William Scoresby senior had made 30 voyages bringing home 533 whales a greater number than any other person in Europe. Scoresby retired to Whitby and concentrated on providing work for the poor and improving the ever busy Whitby harbour before sadly passing away in 1829.
